After a bit over a day of being awake, Dad was having trouble controlling his breathing, it was too fast, which put a strain on his heart. They were afraid that he would have another heart attack due it, so he was put back on the ventilator so that his lungs would have a little more time to heal. They did an ultrasound on his heart to check for any new problems, but the results aren't in about that.
Needless to say, he was NOT happy about this. All he wanted when he woke up and the ventilator was removed was to have water. It took quite a while before they would let him have ice chips. He was able to speak and read a bit, and moved whatever appendage he was asked to move. But, his body wasn't ready to be 'free', so he's back on sedation and breathing assistance. It isn't unusual after the amount of trauma he had and the length of time he's been on the ventilator for this to occur, so after an initial freak out, things have calmed down.
I am headed up again tomorrow for three of four days. We need to deal with the destruction that is my Dad's apartment. Apparently the man who lived in the apartment where the fire started was an 80-year old invalid.
People are capable of amazing things.
