So, it seems that he is indeed awake, not just pretending. They are hoping to remove the ventilator tube tomorrow and start him on respiratory therapy. Until he's able to talk the doctors cannot fully evaluate his status, so I am headed north again either tomorrow or very early the next morning.
You could have heard our collective sigh of relief on Mars...
