It was cold today, although the sun did appear for moments at a time; a veritable heat wave. Quinn ran ahead of me on the boardwalk and got to the ducks ahead of me, but I could tell from that far away that the Ducks were in a Mood.
They usually start flocking over the minute they catch sight of us. Today the hung out at the side of the pond, away from the stairs. We tossed in our handfuls of cracked corn (with cracked corn dust getting on us everywhere), some on the water, some on the side of the pond. Some of the ducks prefer eating in the water, and some prefer a drier meal; they are persnickity.
We tossed in some more. And a little more. The tiny song birds came hopping by to get their share, but not a single duck even looked our way. Having had enough snubbing, we went around to the other feeding spot on the opposite side of the pond. There was another group of ducks hanging out. We tossed in some corn. Nothing. Nada. Not even a glance.
Not three weeks ago we went by and there was a thin sheet of ice built up around the sides of the pond. These ducks got so excited about Cracked Corn ala Quinn that they started busting through the ice with their breasts. Their duck breasts, that is. Quinn calls them his "Ice Breaking Ducks". But today, nothing.
Now, either another mother and kid were there right before us and stuffed those birds full of bread and other non-duck food, or they were trying to tell us something. Not sure what it was, but I'll figure it out.
When not harassing wild ducks, we do other things, like practice writing our numbers and doing a little addition. Watch out preschool, this kid wants to read!
